Living Indicator Library

Forty-one long-range measures tracking New Jersey's quality of life.

The Living Indicator Library is a core public resource developed by the New Jersey Sustainable State Institute. It tracks forty-one key indicators of sustainability, grouped into ten thematic policy areas.

These indicators represent time-series data showing real-world trends, allowing citizens and policy makers to track where we are, and where we are headed, in relation to New Jersey’s long-term sustainability goals.

Economic Development

Measures of household prosperity, labor productivity, job availability, and overall economic performance.

Community & Land Use

Land preservation, crime rates, and metrics that define municipal safety and public spaces.

Education

Graduation rates, school resource levels, and standardized test scores across New Jersey school districts.

Civic Life & Governance

Voter engagement, democratic representation, and citizen awareness of state policymaking.

Housing & Affordability

Cost of homeownership, rental affordability, and developments in state housing inventory.

Health & Social Well-being

Life expectancy, rates of infectious diseases, asthma prevalence, and workplace safety.

Transportation

Road conditions, bridge safety, commuting modes, and safety statistics on state highways.

Natural Resources & Wildlife

Wetland preservation, avian biodiversity, and the quality of New Jersey rivers and marine habitats.

Energy & Land Preservation

Total energy consumption, preservation of agricultural land, beach closures, and development trends.

Environmental Quality & Pollution

Greenhouse gas emissions, public drinking water quality, solid waste output, and regional air pollution levels.
